The Perfect First Date: 10 Tips That Actually Work
Your heart's pounding, your hands are a little clammy, and you're wondering: "What do I wear? What do we talk about? What if it gets awkward?" Don't worry, first dates are nerve-wracking for everyone. Before my first date with my now-girlfriend, I was so nervous I took the wrong subway three times. With these 10 tried-and-tested tips, your first meeting will be a genuinely good time.
- A loud restaurant or a packed movie theater aren't ideal spots for a first date. Pick a place where you can actually talk: a cozy café, a walk in the park, or a visit to the farmers' market. The setting should encourage conversation, not kill it.
- Being on time is a sign of respect. If you're running late, send a quick, honest message: "Be there in 10, the train was acting up." Your date will appreciate the honesty way more than if you show up out of breath and stressed.
- "What do you do for work?" is fine, but better: "What gets you most excited about your job?" Open-ended questions invite longer answers and show genuine interest. Actually listen and follow up. Show you're not just running through small-talk routines.
- A good conversation is like a ping-pong match. Share something about yourself, then send the ball back. If you talk about your last vacation for 10 minutes straight without asking a single question in return, you'll lose the other person.
- Your date deserves your full attention. A quick glance at your screen can instantly give the impression: "I'm not important enough." Put your phone on silent and leave it in your bag, unless you're expecting a genuine emergency call.
- You don't need to be overdressed, but you should look put-together. Wear something you feel comfortable in that fits your personality. A look that's too polished can come off unnatural and make you feel self-conscious.
- The first date is not a therapy session. Avoid talking about ex-partners, health problems, or your annoying boss. Focus on positive, light topics. Show your best side. The darker stuff comes soon enough.
- Lots of people show up with a mental checklist: "At least 6 feet, college degree, athletic." But real chemistry can't be ticked off. Ask yourself instead: do I feel at ease? Am I laughing? Does time fly? Those are the real indicators.
- If it went well: "I had a really lovely evening with you. Let's do this again." If it didn't: "Thanks for the nice evening" is enough, without false promises. Ghosting is never okay; honesty is respectful.
- The most important tip, saved for last: breathe. The other person is just as nervous as you are. It's not about being perfect. It's about being genuine. Even if there's no spark, you had a nice evening and learned something about yourself.
At the end of the day, one thing counts above all: be yourself. Any relationship built on you pretending to be someone else is doomed to fail. The right date will like you exactly as you are. I know, that sounds simple. It isn't. But my best dates were always the ones where I forgot to be nervous.
